Resilient Royals Earn Hard-Fought Draw at Oakwell

Reading fought back to earn a hard-fought 2-2 draw against Barnsley on Tuesday night, with Sam Smith’s second-half double making the difference in an intense battle at Oakwell.

The game began with Barnsley immediately on the front foot, winning a corner within the first 12 seconds. However, a strong punch from goalkeeper David Pereira quickly cleared the threat.

Reading’s first real chance came six minutes in when Smith unleashed a shot from 20 yards. Moments later, Barnsley took the lead. A misjudged clearance from Michael Craig fell to David Keillor-Dunn, who calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner to make it 1-0.

The hosts kept the pressure on, dominating possession and looking sharp in attack. Just after the 15-minute mark, Stephen Humphrys intercepted a sloppy pass from the Reading defence, but his powerful strike flew over the bar. Pereira was called into action shortly after, reacting brilliantly to block Adam Phillips’ deflected shot from close range.

Reading’s first corner arrived in the 24th minute, leading to a half-chance for Jeriel Dorsett. Barnsley struggled to clear their lines, allowing the left-back to get a header away, though it was cleared off the line. Reading began to find their rhythm, with Sam Smith and Chem Campbell combining well in the box, but Campbell’s volley went wide.

The Royals grew into the game as the first half progressed, creating more chances. Ben Elliott’s deflected strike from the edge of the area won a trio of corners, but Barnsley held firm. At the other end, Pereira showed his quality again by tipping a Marc Roberts header around the post.

Just before the break, Reading had a golden chance to equalise. Ben Elliott’s driving run ended with the ball falling to Charlie Savage, whose half-volley whistled just wide. The first half ended with the Royals trailing by one.

Half-Time: Barnsley 1-0 Reading

Reading made a change at the break, with Andre Garcia replacing Dorsett at left-back. The substitution proved crucial as just four minutes into the second half, Garcia played a key role in the equaliser. Driving forward, he found Craig, who passed to Campbell. The forward cut inside and fired a shot towards goal, which Smith smartly redirected past the keeper to make it 1-1.

The goal energised both teams, leading to a fast-paced and open game. Barnsley edged possession, but Reading looked dangerous on the counter. On 65 minutes, Pereira denied Humphrys again, spreading himself wide to block the striker’s shot from close range.

Reading capitalised on Barnsley’s missed chances just two minutes later. Campbell’s header crashed off the bar, and Smith reacted quickest to tap in his second of the night, putting Reading 2-1 up.

The lead didn’t last long. Barnsley responded with relentless pressure, and in the 72nd minute, Joshua Earl scored from close range after Reading failed to clear their lines. With the score now 2-2, the game remained finely balanced heading into the final stages.

Reading made a double substitution in the 79th minute, bringing on Mamadi Camara and Ashqar Ahmed for Savage and Craig. Despite both teams pushing for a winner, clear chances were hard to come by. Pereira made another crucial save from a back-post header, while Reading’s Knibbs missed the target at the other end.

When the final whistle blew, Reading had battled to a second consecutive 2-2 draw at Oakwell, extending their unbeaten away record against Barnsley since 1998. The focus now shifts to Sunday’s FA Cup clash against Harborough Town.
